OVHS NEWSLETTER

January 27, 2006

In the months of February and March there are going to be some very important events and happenings and we encourage all members to participate if they can.

  1. We will NOT have a general membership meeting in February. Instead we will try to get Society committees organized and functioning. We need member involvement on various committees. Members are signed up for the Interview Committee (Oral and video recordings), Fund Raising, Steam Pump Development Plan, Public Relations, Archival, and Student Education. No one has officially signed up for the Membership and Grant committees. All of the committees could use more help. Please contact Jim Kriegh at 297-4161 if your name can be added to a committee.

  1. PLEASE NOTE: The Oro Valley Library Grand Reopening takes place on February 4th at the Library. As part of this event there will be a presentation "Oro Valley: A Trip Through Time" by OVHS members Pat Spoerl and Dick Eggerding at 11:00 AM in the new meeting room. There will also be items from the George Pusch Historical Collection exhibited in two display cases that the Library has for Society use. Take a look at them when you visit the Library!

Don't miss this opportunity to learn more about the history of the Steam    Pump Ranch area and become involved in the Historical Society.

  1.  IMPORTANT: During February we will also be preparing for our FIRST ANNUAL meeting which will be open to the public. At this meeting we will  have a guest speaker, Mr. Richard N. Tully. Mr. Tully will mention the Indian raid on the Tully and Ochoa Wagon Train that took place in the Canada del Oro in 1869. One of the owners was Mr. Pickney Randolph Tully, great Grandfather of Dick Tully. Mr. Pickney Randolph Tully was Mayor of the City of Tucson from 1889-1893. Pickney Tully's son, Charles H. Tully and Lois C. Hughes published the Tucson Daily Bulletin on March 1, 1877. The name was quickly changed to "the Weekly Star" and on January 12, 1879 it was again changed to the Arizona Daily Star.

Following the speaker we will have a business meeting considering changes in the OVHS bylaws and electing additional Board of Directors. This meeting will be held on March 16th at 6:00 PM in the east meeting room of the Oro Valley Library.

  1. The Town of Oro Valley arranged for oral and video interviews with Henry Zipf and Jim Kriegh. This happened on January 23rd and was coordinated by Bob Kovitz, Oro Valley's Public Information Officer. This will be on a DVD to be available at a later date.

  1. It is our intent to start having speakers at the beginning of our Society meetings. We plan to have these talks both audio and video recorded.

  1. Some other exciting things are being developed and this information will be passed on to you in later news letters.
